Summary

This practical coursebook introduces all the basics of semantics in a simple, step-by-step fashion。 Each unit includes short sections of explanation with examples, followed by stimulating practice exercises to complete in the book。 Feedback and comment sections follow each exercise to enable students to monitor their progress。 No previous background in semantics is assumed, as students begin by discovering the value and fascination of the subject and then move through all key topics in the field, including sense and reference, simple logic, word meaning and interpersonal meaning。 New study guides and exercises have been added to the end of each unit to help reinforce and test learning。 A completely new unit on non-literal language and metaphor, plus updates throughout the text significantly expand the scope of the original edition to bring it up-to-date with modern teaching of semantics for introductory courses in linguistics as well as intermediate students。

One of the best books to start the study of semantics。 Rich in the matter of examples and exercises and based on modern models, i。e。 cognitive sciences, this book is my first recommendation to anyone who wants to become a linguist。

I used this textbook for my English semantics class and read almost the entire thing。 For a textbook, I really enjoyed it。 I like the way it is organized, interspersing lots of examples and practice problems throughout the text to reinforce the concepts。 It can actually be kind of humorous at times too, especially the illustrations。 If you study linguistics, I recommend this book as a good introduction to semantics。

This is a decent introductory guide to semantics。 It can overbear you with examples and practice questions, but for a lot of the chapters, they are quite useful。 The examples allow you to see how the concepts are found and used in everyday language。

The practices included in this book is the best solution with the problem of learning Semantics。Every practice before a definition or a comment decreases the abstractness of the information。I really enjoyed studying it this semester。
